Concrete Products company fined €80,000 following fatal workplace accident

March 17, 2026adminBlog

A concrete products company has been fined €80,000 following a fatal workplace accident involving machinery, reinforcing the critical importance of robust safety practices across all industrial settings.

At Naas Circuit Criminal Court, it was heard that a worker tragically lost his life after becoming entrapped in the tail drum of a conveyor system, an incident that highlights the severe risks associated with inadequately safeguarded equipment.

Speaking after the ruling, Mark Cullen, Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Authority, stressed that such incidents are preventable. He noted that “employees must not be put in danger by unsafe working practices whereby safety devices are inoperable.”

Cullen emphasised that all machinery-related activities must be subject to thorough risk assessments, with appropriate control measures implemented to ensure a safe system of work. This includes ensuring that safety guards and emergency stop mechanisms are fully functional at all times, alongside proper staff training and supervision.

The case serves as a stark reminder to employers of their legal and moral obligations to protect workers, particularly in environments involving heavy machinery. Failure to maintain safety standards not only puts lives at risk but can also result in significant financial and reputational consequences.

Businesses operating in manufacturing and construction-related sectors are urged to review their safety protocols, reinforce compliance, and foster a culture where safety is prioritised at every level.
