The Road Safety Authority have released provisional figures for 2022, which shows an increase in traffic accidents and deaths versus 2021.
According to preliminary data on traffic collisions, there were 13% more fatal traffic accidents in 2022 than there were in 2021.
149 fatal road accidents resulted in a total of 155 fatalities in 2022 as opposed to 137 fatalities from 124 accidents in 2021. In comparison to the previous year, this reflects an increase of 18 deaths or 13% in traffic fatalities.
The statistics were released on January 1 and were based on a study of preliminary fatal crash data from An Garda Siochána.
According to the statistics, there were twice as many pedestrians killed in 2022 (41, +21) than there were in 2021. Drivers still made up the biggest percentage of those killed in accidents. This is despite a drop in the number of fatalities among drivers (60, -10).
