Guidance on the Safe Use of Chainsaws

January 24, 2025FrankBlog

Chainsaws are powerful tools that require careful handling and adherence to safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries. This guidance document outlines essential safety measures for the safe operation of chainsaws.

1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Before operating a chainsaw, ensure you are equipped with the following PPE:

  • Helmet with a face shield or safety goggles
  • Hearing protection (earmuffs or earplugs)
  • Cut-resistant gloves
  • Chainsaw chaps or cut-resistant trousers
  • Steel-toe boots with non-slip soles

2. Pre-Operational Checks

Conduct the following checks before using the chainsaw:

  • Inspect the chainsaw for any damage or wear.
  • Ensure the chain is properly tensioned and lubricated.
  • Check the fuel and oil levels.
  • Verify that all safety features, such as the chain brake, are functioning correctly.

3. Safe Operating Practices

  • Starting the Chainsaw: Start the chainsaw on the ground or another stable surface, using the correct starting procedure.
  • Grip and Stance: Maintain a firm grip with both hands and a stable stance with feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Cutting Techniques: Use proper cutting techniques to avoid kickback. Always cut at full throttle and avoid cutting above shoulder height.
  • Awareness: Be aware of your surroundings, including the location of other people, animals, and obstacles.

4. Maintenance and Storage

  • Regularly clean and maintain the chainsaw according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Store the chainsaw in a secure, dry place, away from children and unauthorised users.

5. Emergency Procedures

  • Know how to stop the chainsaw quickly in case of an emergency.
  • Have a first aid kit readily available.
  • Ensure you have a means of communication to call for help if needed.

Conclusion

By following these safety guidelines, you can minimise the risk of accidents and injuries while using a chainsaw. Always prioritise safety and never operate a chainsaw if you are unsure of the correct procedures.
