HSA Releases Updated Guidelines on First-Aid at Work

December 20, 2024adminBlog

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is pleased to announce the release of the updated Guidelines on First-Aid at Places of Work. These new guidelines are designed to enhance workplace safety and ensure that all employees have access to the necessary first-aid resources and training.

Key Updates

  1. Training Requirements: The guidelines now reflect the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) First Aid Response (FAR) training standard. This update ensures that occupational first-aiders are equipped with the most current and comprehensive training available.
  2. First-Aid Kit Contents: There have been significant updates to the contents of first-aid kits. These changes are aimed at ensuring that kits are well-stocked with the necessary supplies to handle a variety of workplace injuries and emergencies.
  3. Emergency Showers and Eye Washes: New guidance has been included on the provision and maintenance of emergency showers and eye wash stations. This is particularly important for workplaces where employees may be exposed to hazardous substances.
  4. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs): The guidelines now include updated information on the use and maintenance of AEDs. This is a crucial addition, as AEDs can significantly increase the chances of survival in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.

Importance of the Guidelines

These updated guidelines are essential for helping employers, employees, safety representatives, and others understand the requirements outlined in Chapter 2, Part 7 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007). By adhering to these guidelines, workplaces can ensure they are compliant with legal requirements and are providing a safe environment for all employees.

The HSA encourages all workplaces to review the updated guidelines and implement the necessary changes to their first-aid procedures and resources. For more detailed information, please refer to the full guidelines available on the HSA website.
