Prioritising Safety in Outdoor Work: Responding to the HSA’s Recent Alert

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has recently issued a pressing advisory urging all outdoor workers to exercise heightened caution. This comes in response to a significant increase in work-related fatalities, particularly among self-employed individuals and farmers .

Ger Hartnett, Senior Agricultural Inspector with the HSA, emphasised the gravity of the situation:

“We are deeply concerned by the recent sharp rise in fatalities, especially amongst self-employed outdoor workers and farmers. We are calling on farmers and all those working outdoors to take a step back, assess the risks, and prioritise safety at every stage of the job. No job is important enough to risk your life.”

At Trant O’Meara Group, the safety and well-being of the employees of our clients is paramount. In light of the HSA’s alert, we are encouraging all employers to take proactive measures to reinforce safety protocols for their outdoor teams:

  • Comprehensive Risk Assessments: Before commencing any outdoor tasks, thorough evaluations will be conducted to identify potential hazards.
  • Enhanced Training Programmes:   We encourage all to update training modules to emphasise best practices in outdoor safety, ensuring all team members are well-equipped to handle on-site challenges.
  • Regular Safety Audits: Periodic reviews should be implemented to monitor adherence to safety guidelines and to make necessary adjustments promptly.

We urge all employers and partners to remain vigilant and to prioritise safety in every aspect of their work. For more detailed information on the HSA’s advisory, please visit their official press release (Health and Safety Authority).
